Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need speech therapy?

Working with a speech-language pathologist might be helpful if you are having trouble communicating, noticing changes in your swallowing, voice, or thinking, or if you feel like your communication or voice isn’t working best for you. Speech Language Pathologists can also support with reading, writing, learning skills, memory, attention, and social/professional communication!

What happens after I reach out? What should I expect at my first appointment?

Before your first visit, you’ll complete our intake forms with more information about your goals, symptoms, and concerns. Some voice or swallowing clients may be asked to make a short video or recording – we provide the instructions to make it easy! At your first visit, you can expect your SLP to spend some time getting to know your needs. This includes a case history discussion to understand when your concerns and how they impact your daily life. Your SLP may include some assessment measures such as cognitive-communication testing, or a swallowing assessment. We then collaborate with you to set goals, identify next steps, and discuss a strategy or technique to practice at home.

How many sessions will I need?

Every person we support is different, so our approach is tailored to you. Our goal is to provide a strategy, technique, or tool that’s helpful in our first session, so that you have something valuable to use right away. Speech therapy is a collaborative process, and those who dedicate time to using strategies and practicing outside of sessions are the ones who notice the biggest difference. For some folks, a shorter duration (4-8 sessions) can be enough to support their goals, while others have goals that evolve and change over time! Therapy planning is dynamic, and you are in control – making the decision together with your SLP.

Do I need a doctor’s referral? How do we start?

Speech Language Pathologists do not need a doctor or health care provider referral. Reach out yourself if you feel you might benefit from support, and we can discuss if we are right for you! The Buttle SLP team also works collaboratively with many other providers (Occupational Therapists, Psychotherapy, ENT, Physiotherapists, Family Doctors, etc.), and can help you navigate a multidisciplinary team, or help recommend providers if needed.

How can I be sure the SLP I will work with is the right fit for me?

At Buttle SLP, our process is to connect, match, and collaborate. Once we understand your needs and you have completed our intake, we match you with the best person on our team. Someone who has experience and passion supporting your concerns. If you are more comfortable meeting with your SLP prior to your first visit, we offer a 20-minute video consultation session for $75. While not long enough to complete an assessment, some folks find it helpful to get to know their SLP and ask more questions they have before starting. If you would like to book this session, please let our team know!

How much does speech therapy cost?

Our clinical rate is $165/hour and is applicable to assessment, report writing, consultation time, and travel. Sessions are billed as a clinical hour, meaning the cost for the session includes 50 minutes of time directly with your SLP, and the remaining 10 minutes is used to plan and prepare before your session, and document our clinical note following. We also offer longer sessions or shorter sessions (virtually), on a case-by-case basis.

A typical assessment is often 60-90 minutes with your SLP, with an additional 30 min for scoring, analysis, and assessment summary note. More comprehensive or medical legal reports are billed hourly and can be estimated during your intake if needed.

As we visit our clients in-home, our travel is calculated from the SLP’s location to you and billed for time above 10 minutes. We always try to group clients geographically to reduce travel when possible.
